Yossi Sarid on the Armenian Genocide
In his address to the International Conference on the 90th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, titled “Ultimate Crime, Ultimate Challenge” held in Yerevan, Armenia on April 20-21, 2005, Yossi Sarid, the member of Knesset and Israel's former Minister of Education restated his words when he was invited as the Minister of Education to the Armenian Church in the old City of Jerusalem to speak on the Memorial Day marking the 85th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Words, which the Armenian community in Israel and over the world took note of with satisfaction, but Turkey complained vehemently, demanding an "explanation" from the Israeli government. And "his government" first stammered, and then, denied responsibility, and then explained that he spoke for himself.
Yossi Sarid remarked that the official position of Israel on the Armenian Genocide is not only the result of a naked political calculation, but because some Israelis and Jews, are afraid that recognizing the suffering of other nations will diminish the "unique" status of the Jewish holocaust.
