Tall Stories of Turkish Official Thesis on the Armenian Genocide
In an article published in the Sunday supplement of the Turkish daily "Radikal" on May 11, 2003, titled "About 1915 and Some Legends", the Turkish sociologist and historian Dr. Taner Akcam refers to the tall stories of the Turkish official thesis on the Armenian Genocide, which, according to Dr. Akcam, have no relation whatsoever with the truth.
Dr. Akcam notes that a number of individuals, as well as bodies founded in Turkey with the purpose of "proving the Turkish viewpoint" (Denying the Armenian Genocide), continuously create tall stories and lies, then other Turks often accept those tall stories as reality, and by repeating them contribute to the fact that the tall story gets transformed, little by little, into "information reflecting the truth." Akcam then addresses some Turkish tall stories such as:
• "Up to the Mondros Armistice, 1397 persons were given various sentences; more than half of them were sentenced to death for the crime of harming Armenians".
• "Compensations for the possessions of Armenians were paid to them at the places where they had been sent".
• "Armenians were not deported from Western provinces of Turkey, and that Catholic and Protestant Armenians were not subjected to deportation".
Dr. Akcam refutes all above-mentioned tall stories of Turkish official thesis on the Armenian Genocide citing Ottoman Archives. He also highlights that these tall stories and allegations are "simply lies, intentionally created by a lie-machine, in order to confuse people". Dr. Akcam concludes the article by calling for a "general serious discussion rid of legends, because he, who doesn't face his own past, cannot build his future".
