94th Anniversary Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in Baghdad

More than 1000 people attended the Holy Badarak, the Divine Liturgy, and Memorial Program at St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Baghdad on the occasion of April 24 commemorating the Genocide perpetrated by Ottoman Empire against the Armenian population in the years 1915-1923. After the Holy Badarak a requiem service was offered for the repose of souls of our Martyrs.
With the participation of St. Gregory the Illumanator Cathedral’s "Zvartnots Choir", "Sharagan Choir" of the Youth Organization of Iraqi Armenian Church (HEG) and Armenian School students, the program included poems, religious hymns and national songs, solo and choral songs. Then, His Eminence Archbishop Avak Asadourian, the Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Iraq delivered his message entitled "April 24 is the chalice offered by our people". The Memorial program concluded with visit to the Martyrs' Monument at the courtyard of the Cathedral by the clergymen, faithful and the representatives of Iraqi Armenian community centers. Flower wreaths were laid at the Khatchkar (cross-stone) Monument.
On April 25 the Armenian National School of Baghdad observed the Armenian Genocide anniversary with proper memorial evening.

Safe Easter celebrations for the first time in Baghdad since 2003

For the first time since Iraq's invasion in 2003, the morning, afternoon and evening services of the Holy Week of 2009 from Palm Sunday to Easter, were held at St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Baghdad.
More than 1000 people attended the Easter service. Earlier, hundreds more attended Palm Sunday (Dzaghgazart), Passion Service (Khavaroom), and Commemoration of the Burial of Our Lord (Taghoum).
Though usually considered as a vibrant community, Iraqi Armenians have been recently fleeing Iraq to other countries. The leaders of the community are exerting extra effort to preserve the community.
